Commercial Skylights are a good investment option

Commercial Skylights Installation in Chicago, IL

In the world of commercial real estate and business operations, the question of whether to invest in skylights is often weighed against more traditional enhancements. However, the decision to install commercial skylights is more than just an aesthetic improvement. Commercial skylights offer a host of benefits that can significantly impact a business’s bottom line, environmental footprint, and the well-being of those who occupy the space. In this article, we’ll discuss the many advantages of commercial skylights, demonstrating why they’re not just a good investment but a strategic necessity for forward-thinking businesses.

Overview of Commercial Skylights

Commercial skylights, more than just windows on the roof, serve as a bridge between a building’s environment and the natural world. They are architecturally designed features that allow sunlight to permeate deep into commercial spaces, transforming how these spaces are lit and experienced. Over the years, advancements in skylight technology have led to a variety of types, from fixed units to operable models, each tailored to meet specific needs and climatic conditions. Their installation is a statement of modern design, energy efficiency, and an appreciation for the natural environment.

Why Invest in Commercial Skylights?

The rationale for investing in skylights extends far beyond simple aesthetics. It’s a strategic investment in the health and efficiency of a commercial space. Skylights offer a wide array of benefits that can enhance the functionality of a building, contribute to the well-being of its occupants, and align with a business’s broader environmental goals. They represent a convergence of design innovation, energy conservation, and health-focused architecture.

Benefits of Commercial Skylights

Commercial skylights offer many unique advantages:

  • Contribution to Employee Wellness – The influence of natural light on human health is well documented. Skylights introduce a dynamic, natural element into the workplace, which has been shown to improve circadian rhythms, enhance mood, and increase overall employee satisfaction and productivity. This natural illumination creates a more invigorating and less stressful work environment.
  • Increased Property Values – Commercial buildings equipped with skylights are often perceived as more desirable in the real estate market. The presence of natural light and advanced architectural features can elevate a property’s appeal, making it more attractive to prospective buyers or renters, and thereby potentially increasing its resale or rental value.
  • Boosts Customer Appeal – In retail and public-facing commercial settings, skylights can create an inviting and visually appealing environment. This enhanced aesthetic can attract more customers, create a memorable shopping experience, and potentially lead to increased sales and repeat business.
  • Reduced Maintenance Costs – Skylights reduce the dependency on artificial lighting, thereby decreasing energy costs and the need for frequent maintenance and replacement of electrical lighting systems. This can translate into significant cost savings over time.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint - By lowering energy consumption for lighting, skylights contribute to a reduction in the building’s overall carbon footprint. This aligns with global efforts to control climate change and promote sustainability.
  • LEED Certification Points – Buildings featuring skylights may earn point toward LEED certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the foremost global green building rating system. This certification can enhance a building’s reputation and appeal to environmentally conscious stakeholders.
  • Tax Incentives – Many governmental bodies offer tax incentives or rebates for the installation of energy-efficient systems like skylights, making the investment more financially attractive and feasible for businesses.
  • Improved Energy Efficiency – Modern skylights are engineered for high energy efficiency, helping to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce costs associated with heating and cooling.
  • Enhanced Daylighting – Skylights provide evenly distributed natural light that can reduce glare and minimize the use of electric lighting, enhancing the comfort and usability of indoor spaces.
  • Increased Natural Ventilation – Operable skylights can be opened to allow fresh air into the building, reducing the reliance on mechanical ventilation and air conditioning systems, and contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
  • UV Protection – Advanced skylights often come equipped with UV-filtering capabilities, protecting occupants and interior furnishings from harmful UV rays while still allowing beneficial natural light to enter.

As you diligently research companies to install a Velux skylight for your home or business, you may encounter terms like "Velux Certified Installer" and "Velux Skylight Specialist." It's easy to assume that a Skylight Specialist would be the superior choice, but that's not always the case. When it comes to these Velux installer titles, the key distinction lies in the percentage of work dedicated to installing Velux products. A Skylight Specialist or Signature Skylight Specialist company commits to a high percentage of their work involving the selling and installation of Velux products. However, if you examine Velux's website, you'll notice that there aren't many Velux Skylight Specialists. Most companies working with Velux are Velux Certified Installers. VELUX describes a Certified Installer as "a company that focuses on a variety of products as well as VELUX products. This company will have completed VELUX's certification program and will have sufficient knowledge to assist customers in VELUX projects."

Oh no! A leak. You've just noticed a dreaded drip from your skylight. But wait, before you panic, let's consider that it might not necessarily be a leak. Especially if it's cold outside, there's a possibility that what you're experiencing is condensation. Think about that cold can of pop you take out of the fridge on a hot day. After a few minutes, moisture starts to collect on the outside of the can. That's condensation in action. The same principle applies to your windows and skylight. When the relative humidity in the air is too high for the outdoor temperature, condensation forms. So, first things first, check the humidity levels in your space. If it's higher than the recommended amount, consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the moisture in the air. If your humidity is within range or if the drip persists even after using a dehumidifier, then it's time to have your skylight looked at by a professional.
